My evolution into a gamer began way before the name "Mom" ever came into existence in my reality. Growing up, my family and I spent many a weekend playing boardgames like LIFE, Monopoly, and Clue. We also grew up with a healthy dose of card games such as Spades and Pinochle tournaments. It was a time when home computers weren't a staple in every house and video game consoles were still "babies in diapers". The word "gamer" wasn't found in the dictionary. Getting the picture yet? Yes, sounds a bit post-apocalyptic in this tech everywhere world, but it was a "simpler time" as the old folks say, and I'm NOT including myself in that category.

Original King's Quest 1984 |
My first video game was King's Quest. The original King's Quest by Sierra. I remember the joy of exploring, finding hidden treasures, and solving puzzles. (Yes I have played the first chapter of King's Quest!) From King's Quest I moved on to more Sierra games, like Space Quest and the follow up King's Quest games. My first experience with a console was Atari and the game Donkey Kong, but the console belonged to my cousins so I only got to play around the holidays when we visited. School and books became a priority through my high school years but I did manage to spend as much time and quarters as I could at the local arcade.
*INSERT REAL LIFE MONTAGE HERE*
So, ten plus years of life and personal gaming had changed for me from boardgames and arcades, to figuring out how to make eating fruits and vegetables fun for two toddler boys. But the year 2001 and Bungie's Halo for the original XBOX changed all of that. I was not built to be a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom). 24/7 with children, even my own, is not my idea of fun, so I tried many ways to keep life entertaining for the boys and myself. The three of us would sit on the couch, each with a XBOX controller spending hours "playing" Halo. Granted, my controller was the only one working but they didn't realize that. The day I knew I was well, and truly in love with video games was the day my three year old son deleted my entire Halo gameplay.
Legit devastation. Hours. So many hours lost. The pain was real. It was then that I knew that video games NEEDED to be a part of my life in some way or another and ObsidianBlade31 was born.
How about you? When did you know "Gamer" would be part of your name? Let me know in the comments below.
